George Takei, who originated the Sulu role on the original Star Trek TV series and is also gay, spoke out against this change, stating that Sulu was always portrayed as a straight man, and he would have rather a new LGBT character be introduced instead to uphold Gene Roddenberry's original vision.Star Trek 3 will help celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Star Trek franchise, which was launched with the original TV series in the fall of 1966.
