Arrival review: Not your average alien invasion movie free downloads

Image result

Taking place after alien crafts land around the world, an expert linguist is recruited by the military to determine whether they come in peace or are a threat.
4Amy Adams shines in this beautiful, intimate movie by the 'Sicario' director.
If aliens landed on our planet, how much time would we allow for communication issues before assuming malicious intent and pushing the buttons on our biggest weapons? Countless films have asked this question, dating back to early sci-fi movies like The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). But Denis Villeneuve’s stylish and meditative Arrival (written by Eric Heisserer and adapted from Ted Chiang’s short story ‘The Story of Your Life’) is unique in showing how hard it might be to painstakingly decipher the language of another species.
Arrival begins with a dreamlike sequence, fast-forwarding through a mother’s memories of her child: clasping the newborn’s hand; seeing the little girl run and laugh; and then watching her sick and dying in a cancer ward. Grandly melancholic and shot with extreme shallow focus reminiscent of Terrence Malick, this sets the intimate tone for a film that’s miles away from your average alien invasion adventure. The mother, Louise Banks (Amy Adams), is a gifted linguist and world-renowned translator. These memories of her daughter will haunt her even as she’s trying to communicate with creatures from another galaxy.
Conscripted by the US military’s Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker), Louise is whisked out of bed and transported by helicopter to a misty Montana field, where one of the twelve alien spacecraft has landed – or more correctly, it hovers just above the ground like a monolithic black cocoon, hollow in the centre, with its own low gravity field. Teamed up with Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner), a theoretical physicist, Louise is tasked with trying to question the aliens about their purpose. Ian is excited at the prospect of talking math with them, but Louise, in one of her delightfully no-nonsense put-downs, suggests they start with ‘Hello’.
Where so many films assume that aliens clever enough for space travel would quickly learn English or develop translation tools, Arrival probes the idea that the language we speak shapes our very thoughts and our ways of experiencing time and conflict. The possibilities for misunderstanding are momentous. ‘Weapon’ and ‘tool’, for instance, are dangerously close in meaning but worlds apart in consequences.
"The real tingles in Arrival come from the awe we experience in the encounters with the Others."
There’s great tension generated here in the race against the clock – the peace-loving scientists working to beat the trigger-happy impulses of paranoid world leaders (China, of course, though the story transcends easy racism). But the real tingles in Arrival come from the awe we experience in the encounters with the Others. An intense vocal and instrumental score by Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson sets off starkly beautiful visuals by cinematographer Bradford Young. Comparisons with 2001: A Space Odyssey are inevitable and well-earned. But the real revelation here is Amy Adams, who shines in these scenes, battling with the heavy claustrophobia of her Hazmat suit, and clearly terrified by the job at hand and the crude tools at her disposal (a whiteboard and markers no less!). The film lets her tremble even as she’s demonstrating extraordinary empathy and courage.
With films like Incendies (2011), Prisoners (2013) and Sicario (2015), Canadian director Villeneuve is a director able to transcend genre demands, combining action, atmospherics and intelligence. It’s a combination fans hope he will bring to the Blade Runner sequel due in 2018. With Arrival, some viewers may be frustrated by the film’s unhurried pace and metaphysical leanings – and admittedly, some final twists may challenge even the most ardent admirers. But it’s a thoughtful, beautiful film – intimate and yet ambitious – and well worthy of the awards season buzz it’s currently generating.

Arrival is in cinemas now.

Agneepath Review Free movie downloads

In a small Indian village Mandwa, Vijay Dinanath Chauhan (Hrithik Roshan) is taught by his principled father about the path of fire – Agneepath. His life is completely shattered when the evil drug dealer Kancha (Sanjay Dutt) hangs his father to death. Vijay leaves for Bombay with his pregnant mother and has only one mission in life- to come back to Mandwa and bring back the glory of his father’s name.

Mixed messages in revenge melodrama.
Only a spinning moral compass stops Karan Malhotra’s Agneepath from being the stuff that Bollywood’s melodramatic dreams are made of. Richly-detailed in every aspect of traditional Indian filmmaking and taking on an ambitious, multi-generational narrative arc, this sprawling 172-minute remake of Yash Johar’s widely-acclaimed 1990 original is a feast for the eyes, a slight strain on the ears and frustratingly difficult to connect with.

A potent series of early scenes establish the scarred mental state of our anti-hero, Vijay Dinanath Chauhan (a role earlier made famous by Amitabh Bachchan). He is first seen as a boy (played by Arish Bhiwandiwala), witnessing the slaying of his honourable school-teacher father at the hands of über-villain Kancha (a wonderfully OTT performance by strikingly-bald actor Sanjay Butt). We then catch up with him as a vengeance-seeking adult (the strapping physical specimen that is actor Hrithik Roshan).

Vijay has infiltrated the criminal world of Rauf Lala (Rishi Kapoor), rising to the position of right-hand man and surrogate son, all the time planning the downfall of his mentor and the revenge-murder of Kancha, now ruling with a murderous hand a massive drug-operation based in Vijay’s island homeland of Mandwa (a nightmarish hell-hole that recalls the jungle outpost of Colonel Kurtz’s in Apocalypse Now).

Agneepath is thematically a film about the honouring of one’s family, but so muddled is Vijay’s motivation it’s impossible to fully sympathise with him. His father intones Mahatma Gandhi’s famous words to the young boy – 'An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind" – yet the adult Vijay ignores the advice to avenge his father’s death in what plays out as an act of great hubris. Vijay has also ignored his mother (Zarina Wahab) since his father’s death, despite claiming he wants her acceptance; their inevitable meeting is ruined by Vijay’s petulant anger. He pines to be with the sister (Kanika Tiwari) he has not seen since her birth, but refuses to shake the bitterness towards his mother. A romance with the lovely beauty-store owner Kaali (Priyanka Chopra) is also hamstrung by Vijay’s sullenness.

Most difficult to stomach is Vijay’s ability to kill without remorse (and Malhotra’s enthusiasm in his staging of the shootings, stabbings, drownings and hangings). Agneepath is a work of vivid visual dexterity, but it’s often in the service of a morally-corrupt agenda; when Vijay leads a town-square full of dancers in the show-stopping dance number 'Deva Shree Ganesha,’ it’s hard to reconcile the joyous movements with the man’s dark spirit.

All of the dance numbers indicate that the very best in the business were involved; a thunderous finale in which Kancha and Vijay face-off (embodying the Ravan and the Ram of Indian mythology) goes on incessantly, though represents the pinnacle of the film’s exemplary production standards.

Bol Bachchan Review free movie downloads

A film tribute to the original 1979 Bollywood comedy movie Gol Maal.

Bollywood remake has a little bit of everything.
This is the new polished and ultra slick action comedy from one of Hindi cinema’s heavy hitters, Rohit Shetty, who has over the years made a successful franchise with the Golmaal films. His new picture, which opened worldwide yesterday, has already got some ho-hum reviews (as well as a lot of very good ones) on home turf, but, for what it’s worth, I thought it was great fun. The energy, the performances, the comedy, the story rhythms, production and styling, and the sheer manic craziness takes hold from the get-go and does not let up over its nearly three-hour running time. Even the song numbers (there’s not many) are strong. It looks pretty and very polished too.
The sheer manic craziness takes hold from the get-go and does not let up over its nearly three-hour running time.

Apparently for some, Bol Bachchan is something of a cinematic sinner (or at least 'dated’). For starters, say its distractors, it’s a somewhat loose remake of what’s thought of as a major 1979 Bollywood comedy called Gol Maal (which I haven’t seen), directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

The story revolves around virtue: What’s the cost of lying in order to save face? Here, the main characters lie to an all-powerful patriarch, whose own integrity is rock solid, in order to preserve their social position, status and livelihood. Much of the film’s comedy comes out of a 'clash of cultures’; tradition vs. modernity; tolerance and acceptance vs. conservatism.

Still, Shetty and co. show a knowing postmodern wit in relation to their picture and the original. At one point, the characters here get a crucial clue to unlock the film’s tricky plot – which revolves around multiple false identities – when they happen to catch Gol Maal on TV!

In modern day New Delhi, Abbas Ali (Abhishek Bachchan) and sister Sania (Asin Thottumkal) lose everything, including their ancestral home, in a legal battle. At the suggestion of a pal, they move to a village called Ranakpur. The place is presided over by scary Prithviraj Raghuvanshi (Ajay Devgn), a wealthy landowner. He’s a hugely macho figure of comic proportions and great eccentricity (he likes to impress his dimwit staffers with his English, which is spectacularly bad). All seem to be terrified of him.

When we first meet Prithviraj, he’s chasing down one of his employees with a strap. It turns out that he cannot abide liars; his victim here deceived him and so Prithviraj puts the guy in the hospital! This sets up the major issue to get the narrative going: Abbas, a Muslim, violates village law while committing a chivalrous act. Instead of declaring his interests (and truly frightened by Prithviraj), he calls himself Bachchan and Prithviraj gives him a job. Prithviraj grows especially fond of Abbas, who is not only a good worker but – at least outwardly – has all the old world scruples and values his boss so greatly admires.

And so begins the film’s tangled plot, based on the classic comic tropes of masquerade and mixed identities; characters here 'swap’ genders (and sexual orientation), disguise their religion (and true feelings), and they keep up this farce until guilt begins to pull at them. The tipping point for Abbas and Sania’s and their pal’s deceit is love; the film’s second half is dedicated to competing romances. Prithviraj falls for Sania and Abbas falls for his boss’ sister played by Prachi Desai.

The gags are pretty good; there’s one lengthy episode here when Abbas receives a visit from Prithviraj, who wants to meet Abbas’ mum, but since she’s dead, this creates all sorts of issues for the hapless liar.

There’s also a couple of lengthy action scenes where the film’s two male heroes punch and kick their way to victory; Shetty uses lots of digitally tricked out slo-mo effects where the characters do battle in mid-air (a la The Matrix). The best bit is the climactic car chase which is hilarious and exciting in equal measure; it’s got the pursued outpacing high performance vehicles in an old bus which seems to have been drafted in from the hippie era.

The cast are fine; I really liked the women, but unfortunately their parts are reduced to looking good and acting sincere and comically subordinate to the men.

The premise is a culture clash of standards that’s all inclusive – religion, social practice, morality, sexual orientation – it’s all comic fodder, and respectful. I think it says a lot about the film’s 'live and let live’ theme that Bol Bachchan’s biggest comic set piece involves a grotesque gay caricature (more precisely, the part is a straight man pretending to be gay in order to secure his real identity). I’m not accusing the film of gay bashing quite; later, there’s a seemingly heartfelt plea for homosexual tolerance (in line with the film’s general 'liberal’ stance on most things). It’s just to say that with Bol Bachchan, Shetty and co. aim to push all the right 'commercial' buttons simultaneously.

Youth is a pivotal point in one’s life. It’s when we start making our own decisions about ourselves and emerge into adulthood. As puberty takes over, our bodies mature, and our interest in sex begins to dominate. First sexual experiences usually occur, and with these experiences, a journey of self discovery.
The films in this list explore the diverse thoughts, feelings, complications, and awkwardness that accompany first sexual experiences in youth. Some of these films are controversial in their explorations and depict issues such as obsession, incest, and rape. Unfortunately, not all first times are enjoyable or romantic.
Regardless of the controversial aspects, these films share a certain truth behind first sexual encounters during youth, including themes of blossoming into adulthood, and realizing that sex is nothing to fool around with.
